WEIGERT, CARL
WEIGERT, CARL (1845–1904), German pathologist. Born in Muensterberg, he worked as an assistant to famous anatomists and pathologists, including julius cohnheim . In 1897 he was appointed professor of pathological anatomy at the Senckenberg Institute of Frankfurt (director from 1884). He discovered and developed methods for the staining of tissues and bacteria, and these methods helped greatly in the development of histology and bacteriology. Weigert's staining methods are still used in histology. He made important studies on tissue degeneration, on embolism and on miliary tuberculosis. -BIBLIOGRAPHY: R.
